Download Article:
The geographic distribution of the Longspined Porgy, Stenotomus caprinus, primarily based on the catch records of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service M/Y OREGON, is discussed. This species is apparently limited to the continental shelf in depths of 3 or more fathoms. Its distribution in relation to bottom type is examined and this factor is shown to be a probable limiting effect in determining its distribution. Present evidence indicates that temperature is not an important limiting factor. In general, larger sized individuals are found in deeper water. Its possible occurrence outside the Gulf of Mexico is noted. The systematic status of the species is outlined.
