Of the 22 species recorded, 16 were found on the northern Gulf coast and eight in southern Florida. Only two species were common to the two regions. With the exception of two species which appear to be endemic, all those of the northern Gulf coast represent boreal species which occur also on the east coast of North America, although the two faunas have been separated since Pleistocene times by the Florida peninsula. Those of southern Florida are tropical or subtropical forms and some of them are found also in the West Indies or northern South America. The ecological conditions of the northern Gulf coast are so different from those of southern Florida that a more or less complete separation of the littoral invertebrate faunas is not surprising. The species are treated systematically with a brief description of each, keys for identification, and drawings of the characteristic features.
