Free Content Hydrodynamics and Respiration in Teredo

Download Article:
A modification of Scholander's volumetric respirometer is described which permits the measurement of the oxygen consumption of marine organisms in an unstimulated state.

Basal oxygen consumption of Teredo, removed from wood, has been found to vary with size from 0.099 to 0.250 ml/hr/gm dry weight.

In place in its burrow, Teredo maintains a positive intramantle pressure of from 5 to 17 mm. of water. When the animals are removed from their burrows intramantle pressures vary from 2 to 5 mm. of water. Significance of these findings is discussed.

When Teredo is removed from wood its rate of oxygen consumption is significantly reduced.
