Abstract:

The author responds to Layton's criticism that Bassin's observation of a particular position of transitionality or a postoedipal psyche organization in the female mind whereby early overinclusive body-ego representations and cross-sex identifications are recuperated symbolically in the context of a differentiated female identity are in fact an uncritical reification of gender in binary terms. Bassin suggests that Layton's critique misreads her work through the logic of the oedipal mind state which organizes difference through repudiation and splitting. Instead, a postoedipal state refers to the capacity to recruit and reuse early bodily representations not yet coded as to gender, in the service of self -mastery, empathic access to another, and appreciation of differentiation rather than difference tied to anatomy .
