Abstract:
In response to Coburn's discussion of my paper, "WeebleWobbles: Resilience within the Psychoanalytic Situation," (2006) I define and discuss a gene/environment interactionist perspective in understanding the development of human resilience. Coburn presents a systems approach, grounded in complexity theory, and explains resilience as an emergent property of the system. In contrast, I present current research that gives evidence of a gene/environment interaction (GXE) in which a genetic or hard-wired predisposition along with the environment or system influences the development of a capacity for resilience in a person. Further, I assert that identification of resilience in individuals can facilitate self-righting in analytic work.Document Type: Research article
