Abstract:
Although nanotechnology is currently receiving a lot of interest from academia, industry, and society in general, it must be recognized that at present the technology at nanoscale is almost nonexistent. Most of the work has been in the area of nanoscale science. The purpose of this workshop held on University of California, Berkeley, campus (45 August 2000) was to identify the key engineering issues that must be addressed, which when combined with nanoscience, will lead to nanotechnology. Five areas were identified: large-scale integration, energy conversion systems, biological sensing and processing, information storage and processing, and diagnostics and manipulation. This report describes the presentations and the discussions at this workshop.Language: English
