Abstract:

The ever-accelerating loss of habitat and the subsequent increased rate of extinction calls for a more proactive and coordinated response from the global conservation community. The text stresses the importance of a multidisciplinary partnership approach; records how zoos have the ability to contribute to conservation; provides examples of the in situ / ex situ conservation initiatives of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust; and sets out a strategy for zoos to implement the tenet that their prime role is as conservation centers.
