Abstract:

Several methods have been proposed for optimal power factor correction at nonlinear loads. The procedures used by these references accounted for harmonics injected by nonlinear loads. Based on some simplifying assumptions, compensator selection and system modeling at both fundamental and harmonic frequencies are derived. An optimization criterion is presented, which allows proper calculation of optimal power factor. Optimization minimizes the distorted power taking into consideration the capacitor values, which would create series resonance and the skin effect. The performance of the obtained capacitor is discussed by means of numerical example.
