Efficient and Accurate Evaluation of the Sensitivities of Coupling between Adjacent Patches

This paper presents a novel technique for calculating the sensitivities of the mutual coupling between two patches with respect to the separation distance between them. These sensitivities are calculated analytically with only one matrix fill. If the conventional finite-difference approximation is used instead, two matrix fills would be necessary to evaluate the same sensitivities. Unlike the finite-difference approximation, whose accuracy is strongly dependent of the value of perturbation, the proposed approach always leads to very accurate and unique results, which are independent on any selection parameters. The proposed approach is applied to evaluate the sensitivities of mutual coupling between two patch antennas. Our results are in very good agreement with those obtained using finite-difference approximation.
