abstract = "Eleven coastal countries of the Americas were examined in a two-coordinate matrix formed by "geographic indicators of coastal orientation" as representatives of the landward side of the coastal zone and "large marine ecosystems" as representatives of the seaward side of the coastal zone. These readily available complementary descriptors shed new light on the comparative characterization of coastal countries and may serve as a tool for improving rapid cross-comparisons. The universe in which cross-national comparisons were set showed relationships that would not have been evident in a more restricted universe (e.g. Latin America).",
