This article describes an online winding short-circuit fault detection technique for fault-tolerant PM brushless machines. It utilises the voltage induced in search coils wound around the un-wound stator teeth and a Kalman filtering algorithm to detect and identify short-circuit faults in a phase winding. The effectiveness of the fault detection scheme is validated by both simulation and experimental results.
