ATSR-2 camera models for the automated stereo photogrammetric retrieval of cloud-top heights - initial assessments

A description of two camera models is given which can be applied to along-track scanning radiometer 2 conical scanner images to provide estimates of cloud-top height and amount. Results are shown of initial quantitative assessments of these camera models and the underlying stereo-matching system applied to cloud-free areas in two different mountainous areas. These results indicate that for cloud-free areas with a sufficiently large range of heights the biases are mostly less than 1 km with standard deviations in the range of 0.31-4.96 km. This is in accordance within the predicted range of 1-2 km from previous theoretical studies.
