Validation of ERS-1/ATSR derived SST in Indian waters

Abstract:On the basis of radiative transfer simulations for Indian tropical conditions, a retrieval technique has been developed for sea surface temperature (SST) estimation from ERS-1/ATSR data. This technique has been applied to real ATSR data of April, May and June 1994 and retrieved SST is compared with near coincident SST from ships. The comparison yields an accuracy of 0.3-0.5 deg K. This accuracy has an improvement of nearly 0.2-0.5 deg K over the currently available global SST, which was found to have a cold bias of 0.2-0.5 deg K in Indian waters.
