Abstract:

Resume. Les images AVHRR de NOAA prises en 1994 ont e te utilisees comme reference primaire pour se lectionner des aires pouvant supporter une activite aquacole dans la baie des Chaleurs dans l'est du Canada. La tempe rature de surface extraite de ces images a permis une analyse a la fois qualitative et quantitative des patrons thermiques observe s pendant la pe riode d'acquisition des donnees. Les autres donne es, soit celles de salinite , de courant et de concentrations en pigments chlorophylliens, ont e te analysees de facon a identifier la variabilite spatio-temporelle des caracte ristiques des eaux de surface. L'ensemble des informations ont e te analysees dans le SIG Idrisi . Les differentes couches d'informations ont permis de produire une carte pre liminaire d'indice du potentiel aquacole de la baie des Chaleurs. Selon cet indice (de fini entre 0 et 1), le secteur de potentiel aquacole situe entre des indices de 0.5 a 0.75 s'etend sur une surface d'environ 300km2. La localisation de cette aire potentiel est en accord avec les fluctuations pe riodiques des masses d'eau et les fortes concentrations en pigments chlorophylliens, pre sentant des conditions environnementales ide ales a une haute productivite biologique. NOAA AVHRR images taken in 1994 have been used as a primary reference in the regional selection of areas suitable for aquaculture activities in Baie des Chaleurs, Eastern Canada. The sea surface temperature extracted from these images have allowed both a qualitative and quantitative analysis of thermal events that occurred during the period of observations. Other in situ measurements, such as salinity, current speed and chlorophyll pigments have been analysed in such a manner as to identify the space-time variability of surface water characteristics. This information has been analysed within Idrisi grid based geographical information system . The different layers enabled to produce a preliminary regional aquaculture suitability index map of Baie des Chaleurs. According to this index (defined between zero and unity), a zone of an aquaculture potential situated between an index of 0.5 to 0.75 was delineated over a regional surface area of about 300km2. This location was foreseeable since it shows periodic water mass fluctuations and high chlorophyll pigment concentrations, providing good environmental conditions for high biological productivity.
