Abstract:
In order to be successful in customer-driven markets, companies need to efficiently translate the manufacturing plans into finished goods. This requires a free flow of timely, meaningful, and high quality information. The following paper proposes a reference model of the manufacturing execution manufacturing activity in make-to-order (MTO) environments. The MTO-based reference model is presented as an IDEF0 diagram and it is derived from the domain knowledge in the area of manufacturing execution. The completeness of the reference model is validated by a panel of experts in the areas of production planning and control in MTO production environments. The correctness of the reference model is validated by a discrete-event simulation model. A comparison is made with an industry-accepted reference model, in order to highlight advantages of the proposal. Keywords: IDEF; information flow; make-to-order; manufacturing execution; reference model; simulation
