Abstract:

The infrared spectrum of the weakly bound van der Waals complex CO-Ne has been studied by using a tunable diode laser source to probe a low pressure (1.4 Torr) CO + Ne mixture in a long-path (160 m) low-temperature (47 K) absorption cell. This spectrum occurs in the 2130- - 1 2160 cm region of the C O stretching vibration. The high resolution and sensitivity of this technique, compared with earlier Fourier transform infrared measurements, has enabled ten new subbands of CO-Ne to be measured and assigned. They in turn serve to locate a number of new states of the complex, including those with K = 2 and 3 for both v = 0 and 1, and that with v = 1 and K = 0 for v = 0. The present results are compared with a recent ab 2 CO initio calculation, which provides an excellent representation of the lower energy levels of the complex, and shows small but significant deviations for some more highly excited levels.
