Abstract:

We describe here a scheme for testing and assisting students with the mathematical skills we thinkare essential for their courses. We discuss the aims and philosophy of the scheme and describe the logistics of running such a scheme. We also look at the performance of the students and discuss the skills that students are strong in or have difficulty mastering. We alsoaskfor feedback on the skills thought essential to a mathematics degree. For those interested in implementing similar schemes, our world wide web (www) site, http://www.ma.adfa.edu.au/~sib/Level2ems.html, has complete sets of notes, database of questions and tests which we have made available (in LaTeX and postscript).
