Abstract:
This qualitative study was designed to investigate how patients participating in cognitive behavioural therapy with interpersonal themes experienced their treatment. One-hour interviews were carried out with 7 women who had undergone group treatment for bulimia nervosa. Interviews were semi-structured, revolving around 2 main themes: (i) How did patients perceive the treatment? (ii) In what ways have patients' lives changed as a consequence of the treatment? Interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed verbatim, and were analysed using Grounded Theory. Seven core categories were identified. Four concerned the first main theme: Experience of group therapy; Therapist qualities; Treatment duration and intensity; and Treatment components; and 3 concerned the second main theme: Identity and personal relations; Consequences; and Course of the disorder and treatment. All core categories contained sub-categories (e.g. Trusting the group). Use of qualitative methods in cognitive behavioural therapy research is discussed. Keywords: BULIMIA; NERVOSA; COGNITIVE; BEHAVIOURAL; THERAPY; EATING; DISORDER; GROUNDED; THEORY; QUALITATIVE; METHOD
