Abstract:
Social capital is a concept that has become popular in describing and understanding the content of civil society networks and their relationship to democratic practice. Two theories of social capital are discussed and applied to democratization initiatives in the Russian North. Although the theories are useful in understanding problems of democratic transition in Russia, their applicability as models for democratization projects remains limited unless they are incorporated within a robust theory and practice of democratic politics.Document Type: Research article
