An overview of the effect of high external pressures on clays and related minerals is presented. The results show that this is an area that will welcome further investigation in the future, especially in view of the importance of clay minerals in the Earths's mantle and, possibly, even in prebiotic chemistry in the formation of amino acids and the mineralogy of the Martian surface.
