Abstract:
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease in which dietary carbohydrate utilization is reduced and that of lipid and protein is enhanced. This is caused by insulin deficiency and is characterized, in more severe cases, by glycosuria, water and electrolyte loss, ketoacidosis, and coma. Chronic complications include neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy, and generalized degenerative changes in large and small blood vessels. Diabetes increases the risk for disorders that predispose individuals to coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular and peripheral vascular disease, infection, and lower-extremity amputations. Often, the diagnosis of diabetes is made secondary to patient presentation with the symptoms of advanced vascular disease. Unrecognized diabetes may manifest as fasting blood glucose >126 mg/dl or random blood glucose >200 mg/dl2 and is often found coincident to blood tests obtained for other indications.Document Type: Research article
