Abstract:
The CrVI oxidation of a mixture of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and oxalic acid (OXH2) in aqueous acid media occurs much faster than that of either of the two substrates alone (DMSO reacts extremely slowly under the experimental conditions). In the mixture, both substrates undergo oxidation simultaneously in a ternary complex of CrVI through a three electron transfer step (i.e. CrVI→CrIII), two electrons from DMSO and one electron from oxalic acid. Hitherto there has been a debate regarding the existence of a 3e transfer in a single step. The micellar effect may be considered as a probe for 3e transfer in a single step. Keywords: micellar effect; chromium(VI); oxalic acid; dimethyl sulfoxide; cetylpyridinium chloride; three-electron transfer

- Progress in Reaction Kinetics & Mechanism is an international journal for the quarterly publication of both in-depth reviews and research articles.
In-depth reviews are comprehensive accounts bringing together work from many sources with the aim of providing an article of lasting value that will become established as the reference source in the particular subject. Research articles, on the other hand, normally focus on a relatively new or recently developed field or technique giving a state-of-the-art account of the subject and may well refer to a narrower range of existing work. It covers the fields of kinetics and mechanisms of chemical processes in the gas phase and solution of both simple and complex systems.
