Abstract:
Technical communicators are being required more and more to work with graphics as well as words. Icons are a specific example. However, a review of the literature reveals that there are no standards for icon design. Some work has been done to standardize icons within an application but rarely across applications. Researchers are beginning to develop a vocabulary for analyzing icons, and others are devising ways to classify icons according to their “basicness” and according to the class of task or concept represented. More needs to be done.Document Type: Research article
