Abstract:

Practicing editors know all too well that circumstances such as the pressure of time occasionally prohibit them from doing the kind of job that they would like to do. Under such circumstances, they simply cannot concern themselves equally with all aspects of a document: content, organization, style, mechanics, and so forth. One approach to this problem was described in the January 1977 issue of the journal: the levels-of-edit concept, employed by a large organization in which managers designate the amount and kind of effort to be spent on a document. Here is another approach that the individual editor or reviewer can take to help ensure the fundamental accuracy and completeness of a document, if not its stylistic perfection.
