Abstract:

In 1997 the state of Oregon implemented the Death With Dignity Act (DWDA), which legalized physician-assisted suicide for terminally ill adults who seek to control timing of their death. Given that Oregon now has more than 8 years of experience with this controversial practice, the purpose of this article is to review key components of the DWDA and experience to date, explore professional implementation issues, examine Federal legislative and executive responses, and describe remaining concerns that warrant further study.
