Making a Connection: The Use of Storytelling as a Strategy to Enhance Faculty's Success With Latina Nursing Students

The purpose of this article is to assist faculty in gaining a deeper understanding of the educational experiences of Latina nursing students. Through the use of participant profiles, the personal stories of three Latina nursing students are presented. The Process of Cultural Competence in the Delivery of Healthcare Services Model serves as the theoretical framework of the study. It is the premise of this article that the storytelling of these students' educational experiences can provide faculty with a rich source of information to connect with culturally and ethnically diverse nursing students. In turn, this connection can lead to the development of culturally responsive recruitment and retention strategies for Latino/a students.

El propósito de este artículo es ayudar a los facultativos a tener un mejor entendimiento de las experiencias educativas de las estudiantes de enfermería latinas. Usando el perfil de tres estudiantes latinas de enfermería, se presenta la historia personal de cada una de ellas. Se usa el Modelo del Proceso de Aptitudes Culturales en la Prestación de Servicios de Salud como parte del marco teórico de este estudio. La premisa del artículo es que al contar las experiencias de su formación educativa estas estudiantes proveen a los facultativos con una rica fuente de información que los ayuda a entender a los estudiantes de enfermería de diversas culturas y grupos étnicos. Como resultado, este entendimiento puede llevar a desarrollar estrategias de reclutamiento y retención que sean culturalmente apropiadas para los estudiantes latinos y latinas.
