Abstract:

The local atomic structure of Eu ions in the crystallised borosilicate glass, 62·5SiO2-28·25B2O3-9·25Na2O-5Y2O3, doped with 0·35 wt% Eu2O3 has been investigated through Eu LIII-edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, using synchrotron radiation. The oxidation state of Eu ion has been proved to be +3 from the analysis of x-ray absorption near edge structure spectra. The bond length of Eu-O to the nearest neighbour in the borosilicate glass crystallised at 973 K is measured to be the same as that of Y-O in YBO3 crystal by the analysis of extended x-ray absorption structure spectra. We discuss the environment of Eu ion in the borosilicate glass, taking the results of x-ray diffraction measurement into consideration. It has been clarified that the EuBO3 crystal, substituted by Eu for Y, can be formed when the crystallisation temperature is relatively high.
