Investigation of the influence of boron-zirconium frit on the properties of porcelain glazes for sanitaryware

Abstract:

Seven glaze compositions for porcelain, in which 0 to 15 wt% of the feldspar in the base glaze composition is replaced by boron-zirconium frit were prepared. The glaze batches were ground in a ball mill until the residue on a 45 μm sieve was 0·5 wt%. The glaze was applied by spraying to unfired 120×120 mm ceramic tiles prepared from sanitary porcelain slip. Samples for determination of fluidity and coefficient of thermal expansion were made. The samples were fired in industrial tunnel kiln at temperature of 1180°C over a 12 h cycle. With increasing boron-zirconium frit quantity the whiteness and the fluidity of the glazes were raised to a maximum whiteness of 92%. The coefficient of thermal expansion values initially decreased and then increased as the amount of zirconium-boron frit was increased. The thermal shock resistance of the samples to 160°C was assessed. Overall it decided that the best properties were obtained with the glaze composition that contained 5 wt% boron-zirconium frit. No faults were detected in glazes produced from this composition; 2000 kg of this glaze have been produced and used in the glazing of sanitaryware.
