Abstract:

The measurement of appearance is an emotive topic that requires attention. There are many in industry who are aware that they need to make better measurements of parameters that correlate with the visual appearance of their products. Equally, there are many new materials that have exciting angular-dependent characteristics, for example new interference-based, gonio-apparent pigments. This angle dependence implies that consideration should be given to measuring colour using geometries other than the conventional sphere-based or 45°/0° configurations. It also suggests that gloss might be usefully measured at angles other than the 20, 60 and 85° conventionally used. An instrument is described in this paper that measures the spectral radiance of a sample as a function of wavelength, the angle of illumination and the angle of viewing. The instrument is computer controlled and designed to be easily operable. © Crown copyright 2004 – reproduced by permission of the Controller of HMSO.
