Studies on Effect of Antioxidant on the Performance of Biodiesel Operated Diesel Engine

Biodiesel is considered as a renewable biofuel based substitute for the fossil diesel as the properties of the biodiesel are similar to those of the fossil diesel. However biodiesel has lower oxidation stability which affects its storage stability. Hence additives are added to improve the oxidation stability of the biodiesel. In India, Honge oil has considerable potential for the production of the biodiesel and hence we have used it for the production of the biodiesel. The commercially available antioxidant propyl gallate (PG) was used as an antioxidant with the concentrations of 250, 500 and 750 ppm. The engine tests were carried out to study the effect of PG on the performance and emissions of the diesel engine. From the engine tests it is observed that the PG has significantly reduced the NOx emissions of the diesel engine with the engine performance similar to the diesel.
