Morphological variability, taxonomy and ecology of Discostella pseudostelligera (Bacillariophyceae, Centrales) and similar species

The morphological study of 21 samples of the Discostella pseudostelligera from 19 lakes, reservoirs and rivers has shown a significant variability in the majority of quantitative (the valve diameter, size of central area, number of striae and marginal fultoportulae in 10μ m) and qualitative (the relief of central area and its structure, arrangement of marginal fultoportulae) morphological characteristics. The number of striae and marginal fultoportulae in 10μ m are the principal taxonomical characteristics (according to the coefficient of variation) among the quantitative features and the most variable are the valve diameter and the size of the central area. The obtained results allowed the author to extend the diagnosis of D. pseudostelligera, refer D. woltereckii and D. stelligeroides to its synonymy as well as specify the ecology and distribution of D. pseudostelligera.
