A large pterodactyloid pterosaur from the Upper Jurassic of Liuhuanggou, Xinjiang, People's Republic of China

Remains of a pterodactyloid monofenestrate pterosaur are described from the lower Qigu Formation (? Oxfordian, lower Upper Jurassic) of Liuhuanggou near Urumqi in the southern Junggar Basin, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, People's Republic of China. The taxon is represented by an almost complete left humerus and the distal end of a left metacarpal IV. Both elements are from unusually large pterosaurs and show typical pterodactyloid features and are possibly conspecific. The dating of the Qigu Formation is debatable, but according to current stratigraphic interpretations the specimen may be slightly older than Kryptodracon progenitor Andres et al., 2014 from the Shishugou Formation of the northern Junggar Basin, which so far was the oldest known pterodactyloid monofen- estrate. The estimated wingspan of the Qigu pterosaur was about 2.5 to 3 m, making it one of the largest Jurassic pterosaurs known. The material cannot be referred to any described taxon but shows a unique combination of features; nonetheless, its incomplete preservation only allows determination as Pterodactyloidea gen. et sp. indet.
