Abstract:

The Eridostracina is a small extinct group of laterally compressed bivalved microcrustaceans with a multilamellar carapace that have been described from marine sediments of Ordovician to Carboniferous age; younger reports are discounted. The zoological affinities and taxonomic rank of the group are uncertain. Some opinions hold that the Eridostracina may be an extinct group of marine branchiopods; others hold they are Ostracoda. The presence of an adductor muscle scar very similar to that of many Palaeozoic ostracods, frontal and dorsal scars, present in extinct and extant ostracods, the hingement, separate for each exuviae, and lack of the inner lamella in Cryptophyllus socialis (Eichwald, 1860) from the Famennian of Russia, suggest that eridostracines represent a suborder within order Palaeocopida (Ostracoda). The eridostracines consist of the key genera [Eridoconcha Ulrich & Bassler, 1923; Cryptophyllus Levinson, 1951; Americoncha Schallreuter, 1968, and Schaefericoncha Schallreuter, 1987], and the supposed conchostracan genus Rhabdostichus Raymond, 1946.
