Abstract:

Decapod crustaceans have been discovered in Ypresian coral-algal deposits cropping out in the "Bertocchi quarry" at San Pietro Mussolino (Chiampo Valley, Vicenza). The crustacean remains consist of tiny carapaces and fragments of pereiopods. The fauna is rich and diversified: among the Anomura, Lessinigalathea regale (Galatheidae) and Ciliopagurus tethysianus (Diogenidae) have been recorded; Cyamocarcinus angustifrons, Dromiopsis paucigranosa, Eotrachynotocarcinus airaghii, Kromtitis koberiformis (Dynomenidae), Daira sicula (Dairidae), Galenopsis similis, Lobogalenopsis quadrilobata (Pilumnidae), Gecchelicarcinus lorigae (Macropipidae), Paratetralia convexa (Trapeziidae), Laevicarcinus lioyi (Panopeidae), Etisus arduinoi, Phlyctenodes multituberculatus (Xanthidae) and Prochlorodius ellipticus (family indet.) have been recognized among the Brachyura. All these species have been recently described from Contrada Gecchelina quarry at Monte di Malo (Vicenza). Probably the San Pietro Mussolino and Gecchelina buildups represented coeval patch reefs of a larger lagoon. Together with species that could be endemic, the new fauna shows affinities with Eocene coral-associated faunas from Hungary and Sicily.
