The recent energy crisis in Chile and Argentina was effected by growing economy and the relatively little natural gas and liquid hydrocarbons production, reflected by diminishing reserve/consumption relation. Coal is an alternative energy source. In the present study, the main characteristics of the coal basins of both countries are presented. Coal blend combustion, coal gasification and methane from coal (CBM) recovery are proposed as part of the solution to the energy crisis.
