Characters and strain partitioning of the N-S striking faults and associated structures in the Eastern Desert of Egypt
Abstract:N-S striking faults appear in the Eastern Desert of Egypt (ED) in an area 90-200 km wide and 550 km long, reaching from the latitude of Hurghada southwards beyond the southern Egyptian borders. Two tectonic phases that produced the N-S faults could be identified. The earlier phase presents a mainly ductile and moderately brittle nature, took place during the Precambrian and resulted in N-S-stretched structures, folds with N-S axes, and N-S trending right-lateral strike-slip faults to which the Hamisana Shear Zone pertains. The later phase shows a mainly brittle character, developed during Phanerozoic times and led to a reactivation of the old right-lateral faults as left-lateral strike-slip faults with an extension component (transtension). The impact of the earlier phase is well developed in the southern part of the area within which the faults are significant (significance area), whereas the structures of the later phase can be observed in the northern part. During the later phase, a pre-existing structural discontinuity, old faults and lithologic boundaries facilitated strain partitioning and non-coaxial strain in the faults' significance area. Wrench displacement vector (Vα1) and extension displacement vector (Vα2) of the faults are 29° and 90° respectively, whereas the regional displacement vector (Vαr) is 59°.
