Abstract:

An important 19th century publication on the temperature structure of the North Atlantic Oscillation NAO is the paper by Julius Hann published in 1890 in Meteorologische Zeitschrift. Practically all statistical techniques available today were unknown to Hann. We will show how the statistical tools available nowadays can be used to quantify and to confirm the character of the spatio-temporal climate variability which was pointed out by Hann more than a century ago in an intuitive yet perceptive way. This will be done by presenting the results of a statistical analysis of the original data 1841-1888 used by Hann and compare those with the results obtained from the period 1960–2005.
