A modified quasigeostrophic equation for barotropic mean flow over topography

Abstract:

The standard mean flow equation of quasigeostrophic theory omits the mass term in the angular momentum budget. A modification of this equation is proposed for barotropic flow over topography where the mass term is incorporated. The modified equation is applied to a topographic instability problem. It is found that the growth rates are substantially reduced if the mass term is taken into account.



In der u¨blichen Formulierung der quasigeostrophischen Theorie wird eine Gleichung fu¨r die mittlere zonale Stro¨mung benutzt, die den Massenterm in der Bilanzgleichung fu¨r den Drehimpuls vernachla¨ssigt. Es wird eine Erweiterung dieser Gleichung fu¨r den Fall einer barotropen Stro¨mung u¨ber Gebirge vorgeschlagen, bei der der Massenterm eingegliedert ist. Diese modifizierte Gleichung wird auf ein Problem der topographischen Instabilita¨t angewandt. Es zeigt sich, dass die Wachstumsraten deutlich zuru¨ckgehen, wenn der Massenterm einbezogen wird.
