Characterization of sky conditions over Ile-Ife, Nigeria, based on 1992–1998 solar radiation observations

Daily global and diffuse irradiance data monitored on a horizontal surface at Ile-Ife (7.5°N, 4.5°E), Nigeria, during the period 1992-1998, have been used to calculate values of the clearness index K, and diffuse ratio K' and the diffuse coefficient K for the station. A characterisation of the sky conditions over the station, based on the calculated K values for the 7 years of data is presented. The annual sky conditions at the station have been shown to exhibit five characteristic patterns comprising of one distinct dry season and four distinct wet (rainy) seasons. Statistical monthly K curves have also been established for Ile-Ife after LIU and JORDAN (1960). The possibility of using these monthly K curves to establish approximate statistical distribution of the daily global radiation for other cities within similar latitude and longitude underscores their importance.

Tägliche Werte der Global- und diffusen Bestrahlungsstärke, die im Zeitraum von 1992 bis 1998 über horizontaler Oberfläche in Ile-Ife (7,5°N, 4,5°E), Nigeria, gemessen worden sind, wurden zur Berechnung des Clearness Index K T , des Diffusanteils K' d und des Diffuskoeffizienten K d für die Station verwendet. Die Himmelsbedingungen der Station wurden auf der Grundlage der für die sieben Jahre berechneten K T Werte charakterisiert. Die jährlichen Himmelsbedingungen der Station zeigen 5 charakteristische Verläufe, einen ausgeprägten Verlauf für die trockene Jahreszeit und vier für die feuchte Jahreszeit (Regenzeit). Darüber hinaus wurden statistische monatliche K T Kurven für Ile-Ife nach LIU und JORDAN (1960) erstellt. Die Möglichkeit, unter Verwendung dieser K T Kurven näherungsweise statistische Verteilungen der Globalstrahlung für andere Städte auf ähnlichen geographischen Breiten und Längen abzuleiten, unterstreicht deren Bedeutung.
