Abstract:
We describe a cryptoendolithic community from a light, coarse grained calcite marble found on Nussbaum Riegel in the central Taylor Valley, Dry Valleys. The community lives 3-4 (5) mm underneath the rock surface and is by the unicellular genus Chroococcidiopsis (C. cf. thermalis), a genus that is well known from endolithic habitats all over the world. Low biomass and chlorophyll-a content indicate that this community is less well developed than others described from Antarctica. Keywords: ANTARCTICA; CHROOCOCCIDIOPSIS; CYANOBACTERIA; CRYPTOENDOLITHIC
