Abstract:

Radiotelemetry and hydraulic modelling were used to examine changes in the movement patterns and daytime habitat preferences of adult European grayling Thymallus thymallus L. (n= 12) between late winter and summer (12 April – 2 July 2001, water temperature 0 –19 ringC). In the River Kuusinkijoki, Finland, grayling mostly remained within short (< 200 m) river stretches in each season. Longer movements were made between the seasonal sites. All but one grayling remained within their capture pool until ice break-up (end of April), when the fish moved to potential spawning sites 0–7km up- (11 fish) or downstream (1 fish). After the spawning season at the end of May, six fish moved to swiftly flowing sites up- or downstream from their spawning ranges, whereas others used the same riffle sites throughout the spawning season and summer. Based on hydraulic model estimates of the used and available habitat, the stream areas selected by grayling over the spawning season were characterized by water depths> 60 cm, water velocities 40 –70 cm s–1, and substrata dominated by particle sizes 0.07–128 mm. During summer, selection was for areas with depths 140 – 300 cm, velocities 40 –100 cm s–1, and particle sizes 16 – 256 mm.
