Presence of Two Molecular Dynamic Processes in a Narrow Temperature Range: Cis-Trans Isomerization across Nineteen Chemical Bonds and Rotation about the CN Bond

We report the basis for the presence of two molecular dynamic processes, in enamino spiro-ketal-type compounds (structure in Fig. 1), that occur in a 330-350 K temperature range. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a powerful tool for investigating such molecular dynamic processes in small and large molecules. This capability is a result of the pronounced influence of dynamic effects on NMR spectra. Analysis of experimental NMR data suggests that one of the two molecular processes is cis-trans isomerization across nineteen chemical bonds. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of monitoring cis-trans isomerization involving this many chemical bonds by NMR.
