Changes in Raman Spectra Due to Near-IR Excitation

Abstract:
We have found that, in shifting from visible to near-IR excitation of Raman spectra, some unexpected spectral changes can occur for some materials. In preparing to purchase a Fourier transform (FT) Raman spectrometer, we have run the same set of seven samples on instruments from five manufacturers. All the instruments used near-IR excitation. The spectrum of one of the materials differed in an obvious way from the spectrum we had obtained routinely with visible laser excitation. Moreover, we found the spectrum varied significantly from instrument to instrument and even from run to run on the same instrument with near-IR excitation. We believe that this variation is due to local heating of the sample by near-IR absorption and that this effect is likely to occur with other materials.Document Type: Research article
