Effect of Optical-Fiber Length on the Width of a Transmitted Laser Pulse: Comparison of Theoretical Calculations and Experimentally Measured Pulses
Abstract:Optical fibers have several characteristics that make them attractive for sensing applications. They are compact and rugged, can carry light over great distances (enabling measurements external to the laboratory), and are not subject to electrical interferences. There have been numerous review articles detailing the use of optical fibers in the development of chemical sensors. (A rapid Chemical Abstracts on-line search turned up 125 review articles in the area of fiber-optic sensors, 80 of which have been published since 1984.) Several particularly good reviews that emphasize luminescence-based sensors are noted here.
