Spatial Diagnostics in Inhomogeneous Flames with a Copper Vapor Laser System: Absorption, Two-Wavelength Fluorescence, and Two-Wavelength Ionization

Two-wavelength laser-excited fluorescence and laser-enhanced ionization are investigated for use with spatial profiling applications. A recently introduced absorption technique (which involves measuring the differential absorption of a probe beam with a pump beam on and off) is also investigated for use with spatial profiling applications and determination of absolute number densities. A high-repetition-rate, high-average-power copper vapor laser with a computer-controlled data acquisition and beam scanning system was used for speed, repeatability, and ease of data collection. Design, construction, and associated operating parameters are reviewed. Preliminary results are presented from an application of these techniques to the measurement of sub-part-per-million concentrations of sodium in a separated acetylene-oxygen-nitrogen flame.
