A Sample Transfer Technique for the Analysis of Trimethylgallium by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy with Exponential Dilution Technique

Abstract:

The spectrochemical analysis of pyrophoric trimethylgallium (TMG) by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) involves careful handling and transfer of this sample. Bertenyi and Barnes described a method for the determination of silicon in TMG based upon the transfer of a neat TMG sample into an exponential dilution flask by means of a microliter syringe. When the sample was being withdrawn from a sealed reservoir, the syringe needle often was damaged because traces of TMG on the tip burned in air while the syringe was being transported to the exponential dilution flask. This made further sampling impossible, because the product formed clogged the very fine capillary. Therefore the need arose to protect the microliter syringe from air during the course of the experiment.
