Abstract:

The chirality of a substance can be determined from the measurement of the optical rotatory dispersion in the infrared region (IR-ORD) of its solution in a nematic liquid crystalline solvent, since the mixture transforms to a so-called induced cholesteric phase. The helical handedness and the length of the pitch depend on the structure and the absolute configuration of the chiral solute. This method is particularly advantageous for the enantiomeric characterization of very small amounts of material.
