For far ir studies of powders, it is necessary to prepare the sample in a finely divided state, and run it dispersed in some nonabsorbing medium such as a mull in Nujol or as a pressed polyethylene disk. These both have drawbacks. The mull tends to settle with time or to leak under
vacuum, causing channeling. The disk works quite well if one can obtain the correct, easily pressed highly linear polyethylene such as the one recommended by Schiele and Halfar, and if one handles it with great care (it is very brittle).
