The rapid analysis of products in the bromine-benzylcyanide reaction poses an interesting problem. Gas chromatography cannot readily be used because of product breakdown on the column. Infrared analysis is complicated because of the array of compounds in the reaction mixture. Thin-layer chromatography can be used, but quantitative analysis is difficult. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance is found to work exceedingly well.
