We have previously shown that bridgehead-substituted methyl and ethyl adamantanes can be characterized and identified using a combination of infrared and nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Although NMR is the most useful diagnostic tool in alkyladamantane structural determinations, the infrared spectra exhibit certain diagnostically useful medium-intensity absorption bands in the 1338–1385-cm−1 region.
